Attack on Sidon by Commodore Charles Napier, 26 September 1840. British, Turkish and Austrian ships bombarding Egyptian positions in the Lebanese port of Sidon during the Syrian War. The war broke out after Maronite Christians revolted against occupying Egyptian forces which had invaded Syria the previous year. The ships, L-R, are: HMS Gordon (flag), HMS Thunderer (84 guns), Turkish corvette (20 guns), Austrian frigate Guerriera, HM Brig Wasp (16 guns), HMSS Stromboli. Date: 1840
