Art Nouveau memorial to Comte Frederic de Merode (hero of the Belgian Revolution who died at Mechelen in 1830) - Place des Martyrs, Brussels, Belgium - the monument was designed by sculptor Paul Du Bois (based on initial plans by the architect Henry Van de Velde) and inaugurated on September 24th, 1898. The figure is a volunteer wearing the typical blouse of the revolutionaries of the time. Date: circa 1905
