The Death of Sachem Wamsutta

The funeral of Pokanoket Sachem Wamsutta, known as Alexander to the English colonists; he had died of an illness considered suspicious by his people, after being captured and imprisoned by the Plymouth colonists. Wamsutta lies on a stretcher by the river, Pokanoket people grouped behind him. Two men stand on a flat rock by the river, one kneeling with a bow, the other shouting with cupped hands out onto the water. His death was a significant factor that led to the later King Philips War. Date: 1675
