An archetypal Victorian melodrama image of the last-minute rescue of a man tied to a railway line. Its appearance in After Dark by Dion Boucicault, first produced Princesss Theatre, 12th August 1868. was the first in Britain, although it had been used in the U.S.A. The train is travelling on the newly opened underground railway, the first in the world. Date: 1868
