Cartoon, Messrs Stephens and Yardley
Cartoon, Messrs Stephens and Yardley don t like being harassed, and are now running the " Vicar" themselves. Possibly a reference to the comic operetta, The Vicar of Bray. William Yardley (1849-1900, left) was a first class cricketer, as well as an actor, playwright and drama critic. Henry Pottinger Stephens (1851-1903, right), was a dramatist and journalist. They wrote the libretto of a burlesque melodrama together, entitled Little Jack Sheppard, which opened at the Gaiety Theatre in December 1885.
