101st Airborne Division Memorial near Eindhoven
Operation Market Garden involved capturing a sequence of bridges over rivers so that a rapid armoured advance could drive from Belgium through Holland to the German border in September 1944. The Amercan 101st, the Screaming Eagles, had the task of taking bridges north of Eindhoven, including this area just below the Wilhemina Canal at Son, and the 502nd and 506th Parachute Infantry Regiments dropped with that objective. The Memorial is just off Airbornelaan on the edge of a small ornamental garden. The wooden sign with the magnificent eagle commemorates the liberation of Eindhoven on 18th September, the day after the Operation started. In the garden behind the sign is a stone monument with a thematic map showing the Wilhemina Canal, the 502nd and 506th drop zones and Son and Eindhoven. Alongside is a torch of freedom and the date 18 September 1944. Date: 2001
