A cutaway view of the Endurance, the flagship of Ernest Shackletons Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition, which began in 1914. Encountering pack ice, the ship became icebound in January 1915. Remaining trapped, the Endurance was abandoned, sinking, in November 1915
