Bystander front cover featuring Miss Margaret Whigham Featured 26 Sep 2017 Print

Bystander front cover featuring Miss Margaret Whigham

Margaret Whigham (1912 - 1993), British society figure, debutante of the year in 1930. Later Mrs Charles Sweeny, after marrying the American golfer, and then Duchess of Argyll, whose scandalous divorce case, involving the photographs of the "headless" man plunged her into disgrace and penury. Pictured on the front cover of The Bystander shortly before her celebrated first marriage. Date: 1933

Christmas Morning 1919 Featured 26 Sep 2017 Print

Christmas Morning 1919

Impression of Christmas morning 1919 by H. M. Brock, the counterpart of an illustration done by H. M. Brock's brother, C. E. Brock of a Victorian Christmas morning in 1869. The two pictures were commissioned by The Graphic and appeared in its Christmas Number 1919, which celebrated the magazine's fiftieth anniversary. Its first issue launched on 4th December 1869. Note the Christmas presents enjoyed by the family's children - a tank, a plane and a teddy dressed in a Royal Navy uniform feature - indicating the period, immediately after the First World War. See picture number 11936741 for the 1869 picture. Date: 1919

The Ballad of the Graphic

See picture number 11936735 for the other page and the first half of the poem. Date: 1919
