Apres la Guerre No. 3 - WWI postcard by George Ranstead Featured 12 Aug 2011 Print

Apres la Guerre No. 3 - WWI postcard by George Ranstead

Humorous postcard drawn by amateur soldier artist of the Great War, George Ranstead, who, in a series of illustrations suggesting what life might be like at the end of the war, shows a man peering intently at the rare sight of a lump of sugar, held in a strong room and protected by policemen - a wry look at the impact of rationing during the war.
circa 1916

British band playing in the square of a French town Featured 12 Aug 2011 Print

British band playing in the square of a French town

British band playing in the square of a French town. On reverse of postcard - Saturday. Dear Hubert, Am enclosing a few rough sketches. Mind you they are rough. Have only an ordinary pen and ink with which to do the trick. Managed to get hold of them at last place I was at. I thought perhaps you would like it better than letter - I do too - for there's not so much to fill up, eh ! Hope to receive a letter from you in a day or two's time. . 1190 Private Leslie Loveland, 1St/5Th Battalion Royal Warwickshire Regiment, 143Rd Brigade, 25Th Division. Joined 21.11.15

Hinged brass tobacco tin - East Yorkshire Regiment Featured 12 Aug 2011 Print

Hinged brass tobacco tin - East Yorkshire Regiment

A small hinged brass tobacco tin engraved on reverse - (2856 Private) Arthur C. Stephenson and dated 1918. Together with an engraved badge of the East Yorkshire Regiment with the place names of Merris and Nieppe. The 31st Division beat off the assaults of German divisions in that location on 12th-14th April 1918 and according to Ray Westlake's Kitchener's Army, the 31st Division was made up of the 92nd, 93rd and 94th Brigades . The 92nd Brigade contained, among others, the the 11th Battalion The East Yorkshire Regiment (2nd Hull) so it would seem that Stephenson was one of Kitchener's Army. Trench Art
