Clockwise from far left: Princess Victoria, later Marchioness of Milford Haven, the Grand Duke holding Princess Marie (1874 - 1878), Princess Alice with her arms around Princess Alix (later Tsaritsa Alexandra Feodorovna of Russia, wife of Tsar Nicholas II), Princess Elizabeth (Ella, later Grand Duchess Elizaveta Feodorovna of Russia), Princess Irene (later Princess Henry of Prussia) and Prince Ernst Ludwig (Ernest Louis, known as Ernie), later Grand Duke of Hesse.

From left: Prince Maurice of Battenberg (1890-1914), killed at Ypres in October 1914, Princess Ena of Battenberg (1887 - 1969), later Queen Ena of Spain, Prince Leopold of Battenberg, later Lord Leopold Mountbatten, who suffered from haemophilia (1889-1922), and Prince Alexander of Battenberg, Marquess of Carisbrooke (1886-1960).
