Hussein bin Ali - Sharif and Emir of Mecca and King of Hejaz
Hussein bin Ali ) - Sharif and Emir of Mecca from 1908 until 1917, when he proclaimed himself King of the Kingdom of Hejaz. Initiated the Arab Revolt in 1916 against the Ottoman Empire during World War One. Ruled Hejaz until 1924, when, following defeat, he abdicated his kingdom and titles to his eldest son Ali. Another son, Faisal bin Hussein bin Ali al-Hashimi was King of Iraq (as Faisal I) between 1921-1933. This drawing is described as the first portrait of King Hussein ever produced. Date: 1924
