Gladstone and the Midlothian Campaign - Departure, West Cald
A scene showing four-times Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone being waved off by a huge crowd of people at West Calder on his tour of Midlothian during a US-style campaign which saw the elderly statesman come out of the retirement to take the ultra-Tory seat. Orchestrated by Lord Rosebery, Gladstone undertook a tour of the area which was highly publicised. He travelled on a Pullman train from which he was able to address gathered crowds. Many queued for hours to hear him speak and paid up to 5 a ticket. Garlands decorate street lamps and a banner proclaiming, " Prood to See You" decorates the station building"
