After being forced into retreat by the Turkish army he and his men entrenched themselves at Kut Al Amara in December 1915. Cut off from assistance they resisted the besieging army until April the following year when Townshend finally surrendered and he and the survivors were taken into captivity. He later became a Member of Parliament. Date: circa 1916
