Welsh miners wives banner

Welsh miners wives hold up their banner on a demonstration during the national miners strike of 1984 - 85. The banner reads, Maesteg & Afan Valley Miners women support group and also includes caricatures of Arthur Scargill (National Union of Mineworkers President), Margaret Thatcher (Prime Minister) and Ian McGregor (head of the National Coal Board), the latter being described as Thatcher's hatchet man'. Fig Tree growing out of a tomb in Watford Churchyard

A Fig Tree growing out of a tomb in Watford Churchyard - the legend runs that a lady buried in the vault from which the tree is growing was an atheist, and that on her death-bed she adhered to the tenet that expressed a wish that a fig tree might grow out of her heart if there were a God.... Local thought today is that the growth of the fig tree is more likely down to the vicars preference for eating figs as he walked to church, spitting the pips out as he went. It is also unlikely that an atheist would have occupied such an impressive tomb, so close to the church! Date: circa 1920s

Mrs Anthony Eden & son Simon by Madame Yevonde Featured Print

Mrs Anthony Eden & son Simon by Madame Yevonde

Mrs Anthony Eden, nee Beatrice Beckett pictured with her baby son, Simon. In 1923, shortly before Eden's election to Parliament, he married Beatrice and together they had three sons: Simon (born 1924), Robert, and Nicholas (19301985). Robert died soon after birth in 1928. The marriage was not a success, with both parties apparently conducting affairs. By the mid-1930s his diaries seldom mention Beatrice. The marriage finally broke up under the strain of the loss of their son Simon, who was killed in action with the RAF in Burma in 1945. His plane was reported "missing in action" on 23 June, and found on 16 July; Eden did not want the news to be public until after the election on 5 July, to avoid claims of "making political capital" from it. Date: 1925
