Ouled Nails Woman in Covered Camel Palanquin
An Ouled Nails woman in Southern Algeria, showing her very distinctive and elaborate traditional clothing. The women earned money through belly dancing. The women are heavily made-up, going unveiled at all times and wear their hair up, creating an incredible style. Pictured in a camel palanquin (covered litter), used to transport wives and children across the arid desert, each with a central ventilation shaft, which can double as a tall structure to alert rescuers if buried in a sandstorm in the desert. Date: circa 1904
