Homeless Men in a Royal Park, London, 1903 Featured Print

Homeless Men in a Royal Park, London, 1903

Illustration showing a group of homeless men sleeping on the grass in one of London's Royal Parks, 1903. The original caption for this image ran: The Submerged Tenth - Lounging in London's Royal Parks. Vagabonds, wastrels, and tramps of every kind lie about the grass, and sometimes they perform their ablutions. Strangely enough this is most frequently done in the parks under the Crown, and even in the park in front of the royal palace. Date: 10/10/1903

Ada-Kaleh - Bego Mustaffa Featured Print

Ada-Kaleh - Bego Mustaffa

Bego Mustaffa - almost certainly the ruler and headman of the fortified Turkish Island of Ada-Kaleh (1895 - 1900). The town is now underwater. Situated on the Danube - submerged in 1970 due to the building of a hydro-electric station. Three kilometres from Orsoza. Known as a free port and smugglers nest. Controlled by Austria-Hungary and therefore free from taxes/customs for many years. Population was 600-1000 inhabitants
