LCC-LFB Massey Shaw fireboat at Blackfriars

The Massey Shaw was built in 1935 by the J Samuel White company at Cowes, Isle of Wight. She was built to a London County Council design, and cost around £18, 000 to build. The vessel was named after Eyre Massey Shaw, a former chief of the London Fire Brigade. Seen here is the Massey Shaw laying off her moorings (river station) at Blackfriars on the Victoria Embankment. Pygmalion - George Bernard Shaws play opens in 1914

Spread from The Sketch magazine showing scenes from the George Bernard Shaw play, Pygmalion, which opened at His Majesty's Theatre, London on 11 April 1914. The cast included Mrs Patrick Campbell as Eliza Doolittle, Edmund Gurney as Alfred Doolittle and Sir Herbert Tree as Professor Higgins. The Sketch dubbed it Bernard Shaw's naughty word play as Eliza utters the word "bloody" much to the amusement of the audience who were not used to hearing bad language on the stage. Date: 1914
