Bonzo a star turn again ... by George Studdy

Bonzo a star turn again in "From Dover Street to Dixie": the Studdy Curtain at the London Pavilion. He appeared in a Cochran revue, depicting a journey from England to America on a specially designed curtain, shown during the interval after the fire curtain was raised. George Ernest Studdy (1878-1948), was the creator of Bonzo, a small dog with saucer-like eyes and indiscriminate breeding who first appeared in the Sketch in 1922. The Bonzo craze swept the world resulting in postcards, annuals, toys and other merchandise. Credit should read: Estate of George Studdy/Gresham Marketing Ltd./ILN/Mary Evans Date: 6 June 1923

Bonzo gets the surprise of his life by George Studdy

Bonzo gets the surprise of his life -- Bonzo introduces himself to Radio Rex, the electric toy consisting of a dog who jumps abruptly from his kennel in response to any sharp sound acting on his "vibrator". George Ernest Studdy (1878-1948), was the creator of Bonzo, a small dog with saucer-like eyes and indiscriminate breeding who first appeared in the Sketch in 1922. Studdys Dog Studies: Brevity is the soul of wit by G. E. St

Early illustration by G. E. Studdy showing a tearful Spaniel with a recently docked tail being grinned at by a smug cat. Studdy also produced a large body of work for the Sketch before and after Bonzo including his later creation, Ooloo the cat. His early cartoon dogs were simply known as the Studdy Dog until readers demanded a name and Bruce Ingram, the ILN editor, suggested his immortal moniker.
