Lady Lavery by Sir John Lavery
Hazel, Lady Lavery (1886 - 1935), formerly Hazel Martyn and second wife of the celebrated portrait artist Sir John Lavery who painted her portrait hundreds of times. A renowned beauty, she was a talented artist in her own right and popular society hostess. This portrait of Hazel was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1925. Date: 1925

Lady Lavery - A Self-Portrait
Hazel, Lady Lavery (1886 - 1935), formerly Hazel Martyn and second wife of the celebrated portrait Sir John Lavery who painted her portrait hundreds of times. A renowned beauty, she was also a talented artist in her own right a this self-portrait, entitled, The Lilac Muslin proves. The accompanying text in The Sketch magazine mentions that she had been ill for a long time. She died on 1 January 1935, less than four months after this portrait was published. Date: 1934

A red-haired woman staring into the eyes of her lover - a magnetic but dangerous looking Apache man, an allegedly savage member of the Parisian underworld haunting areas such as Montmartre and La Villette in the early 20th century. Apache types were a popular subject for illustrators during the 1920s, possessing as they did a streak of exotic sexuality, though they were often depicted as being casual or even cruel to their lovers. Date: 1929
