From Palace to Tomb, Ancient Egypt Reconstruction by Matania
Episode III - From the Palace to the Tomb - Going West to the Burial Place. Third in a series of illustrations depicting the journey of a deceased Pharaoh from palace to tomb, reconstructed by Sphere special artist, Fortunino Matania in the magazine's special Egypt number. Here, following a journey across the Nile, the body of the Pharaoh goes west in a huge funeral procession across the plain towards the burial place. The funerary coffer or shrine is placed on a boat shaped platform, and is drawn by four oxen; these are later offered up as sacrifices at the entrance to the tomb. The wife of the deceased mourns her loss by the side of the coffin while a number of slaves bear offerings of cakes, flowers, jars of water, vials of perfume and vases of alabaster containing unguents. Following that are all the items, from state couches to small scarabs, beds, chairs, jewellery, weapons and armour, that the deceased may need in the afterlife. Behind the oxen walks the master of ceremonies in a leopard skin holding a libation vase from which he sprinkles water on the final resting place to purify it. Following the bier comes the crowd of mourners. Date: 1923
