Some of Our Girls at John Groom's Orphanage and Crippleage opened in 1890 at Clacton on Sea, Essex. Groom was a London engraver and evangelical preacher, whose concern for poor and often disabled flower sellers, and for deprived and orphaned children, led him to set up a charity which in 1907 became John Groom's Crippleage and Flower Girls Mission

Aerial view of Nell Lane Hospital, Withington, Manchester, opened in 1855 as Chorlton Union workhouse. The cross shaped block (left of centre) was the main workhouse building. The row of long blocks (above centre) was a new infirmary opened in 1866. Designed by Thomas Worthington, it was the first pavilion plan infirmary built in England. The site later became known as Withington Hospital

Whitechapel Workhouse Infirmary, womens ward

An old women's ward in the Whitechapel Workhouse Infirmary on Charles Street (later Baker's Row, now Vallance Road), East London. Some inmates lie in bed while other sit on chairs wearing the workhouse uniform of long dress, apron, shawl and bonnet. The floor is mostly bare boards. Pictures hang on the walls and a table has plants and flowers on it. Gas lights hang from the ceiling
