The Nimrod Antarctic Expedition at the furthest point South

Photograph showing Lt. Adams, Frank Wild and Lt. Ernest Shackleton (left to right) standing beside a British flag at the furthest point South that they reached, 9th January 1909. These three men and Eric Marshall (who took the photograph), made an attempt to reach the South Pole as part of the Nimrod Antarctic Expedition of 1908-09. They got to this point, 111 statute miles from the Pole, before they had to turn back due to a shortage of supplies.

Nellie Wallace's party at Warwick Square

A large group of guests gathered on the stairs at the engagement party of comedienne, Nellie Wallace and Mr. J. Selwyn Smithurst at Warwick Square, London. The party lasted from 11pm to 5am and included many of the most famous names from the London stage. In the front row is Mr Horace Sheldon (absolute foreground) and then, from left to right, Mr Selwyn Smithurst, Mrs Marcus, Mr Frank Lawton, Miss Renee Houston, Miss Nellie Wallace, Miss Evelyn Laye, Mr Billy Marshall, Mr Lea Leveson, Miss Nora Delaney and Mr Lackay, Miss Sophie Tucker's husband.
