Sir Douglas Haig in private office on advanced GHQ train
Field Marshall Sir Douglas Haig (1861 - 1928). Commander-in-chief of the British Forces in France and Flanders during the Great War pictured in his private office on the " Advanced G.H.Q." train, shortly before the Armistice in November 1918. It was from here that he directed the advance of the British army after the breaking of the Hindenberg line and the retreat of the German army in the summer and autumn of 1918. Photograph published in The Graphic following his death in February 1928.
