Marie Curie

Born in Poland in 1867, after receiving her secondary education she worked as a governess for eight years. Marie moved to Paris and read Physics at the Sorbonne, where she received a scholarhip which allowed her to move back to Poland to take a second degree in Mathematics. She married Pierre Curie in 1895 and their research into radioactivity resulted in a joint Nobel prize. (1903) Maire succeeded Pierre in the position of Professor of Physics at the Sorbonne after his death, and through her research she isolated pure radium. In 1911 she became the first person to be awarded the Nobel Prize on two occasions

Princess Alice with Grand Duke Louis of Hesse

Princess Alice, Grand Duchess of Hess with her husband, Grand Duke Louis (Ludwig IV) of Hesse (1843-1878). Alice was Queen Victoria's third child and second daughter. She married Louis on the 1st July 1862, at Osborne House beneath a portrait of her recently deceased father, Albert, Prince Consort. Alice and Louis had five daughters and two sons, including Alix, the future Tsaritsa of Russia. Alice's life was tragically cut short when she died of diptheria at the age of only 34, contracted while nursing her children. Alice is the maternal great-grandmother of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. Date: 1862

Princess Beatrice of Saxe-Coburg with family Featured Image

Princess Beatrice of Saxe-Coburg with family

Princess Beatrice of Saxe-Coburg (1884-1966), fourth and youngest daughter of Prince Alfred of Edinburgh and his wife, Maria Alexandrovna (later Duke and Duchess of Saxe-Coburg), shown here with her husband, Alfonso, 5th Duke of Galliera (1886-1935) and her three sons, from left, Alonso (1912-1936), Ataulfo (1913-1974) and Alvaro, 6th Duke of Galliera (1910-1997). Known as Baby Bea in the family, she married King Alfonso XIII's cousin but refused to convert to Catholicism. Alfonso was compelled to take away his cousin's army commission and titles. After spending time at homes in Coburg and Switzerland, the couple returned to Spain in 1912 where Beatrice aggravated tensions between Alfonso and his wife Queen Ena (Beatrice's cousin), openly flirting with the king and allegedly procuring mistresses for him. Eventually, she was ordered to leave Spain once more, although she did return, bravely remaining behind in 1931 after the proclamation of the Spanish Second Republic, to look after the King's elderly aunt
