Princess Alice with Grand Duke Louis of Hesse

Princess Alice, Grand Duchess of Hess with her husband, Grand Duke Louis (Ludwig IV) of Hesse (1843-1878). Alice was Queen Victoria's third child and second daughter. She married Louis on the 1st July 1862, at Osborne House beneath a portrait of her recently deceased father, Albert, Prince Consort. Alice and Louis had five daughters and two sons, including Alix, the future Tsaritsa of Russia. Alice's life was tragically cut short when she died of diptheria at the age of only 34, contracted while nursing her children. Alice is the maternal great-grandmother of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. Date: 1862

Royal group at Rosenau Castle in Coburg gathered to celebrate the engagement of the Czarevitch Nicholas (later Czar Nicholas II) to Princess Alix of Hesse. The engagement took place at the wedding of Princess Victoria Melita of Edinburgh to Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig of Hesse. Each member of the family is annotated, and includes Prince Alfred of Edinburgh, Prince and Princess Louis of Battenberg (the latter formerly Princess Victoria of Hesse), Grand Duke & Duchess Serge of Russia (the latter formerly Princess Elizabeth of Hesse), Princess Marie of Edinburgh (Crown Princess of Romania), Princess Beatrice of Edinburgh and Prince and Princess Henry of Prussia (the latter formerly Princess Irene of Hesse). Rosenau was the birthplace of Albert, the Prince Consort

Queen Victoria's two eldest daughters: on the right, Vicky, Princess Royal, Crown Princess, later Empress of Prussia (1840-1901) and Princess Alice, Grand Duchess of Hesse (1843-1878). This photograph, was taken in the mid-1860s, when the German countries declared war on Austria. Vicky's husband, Fritz commanded one of the three Prussian armies in the field, while Alice's husband Ludwig was a front line officer in the Hessian regiments.
