LCC-LFB Tooley Street fire station and its crews

Built in 1879, and located at 165 Tooley Street, this station remained operational until 1928 when the new Dockhead fire station was opened and the engines and crews transferred there. This building still stands in Tooley Street today. A Dennis pump and pump escape are pictured and a child can be seen at a first floor window (the firemen lived at the station along with their families)

David Lloyd George leaving Downing Street

Lloyd George pictured leaving Downing Street after his resignation with his wife and daughter Megan. His resignation announcement featured in the Court circular of 19th October. Lloyd George was the president of the Board of Trade between 1905-1908 and became the Chancellor of the Exchequer in 1908. His most popular move was to pass the Old Age Pensions Act and the National Insurance Act. He superseded H. H Asquith as coalition Prime Minister, 1916-1922, successfully handling peace negotiations after the war. In 1921 he came upon his most controversial agreement with Sinn Fein for the independence of Southern Ireland. His popularity faded and his party was undecided about their support. In 1922 Lloyd George handed in his resignation

Emigrant Ship Leaving Belfast

Emigrant Ship Leaving Belfast (1852). Wilson, James Glen 1827-1863. This painting, by a young artist from County Down, shows a departing ship, probably bound for America, being towed down the Victoria Channel in Belfast harbour, towards the open sea. As a work of art the picture reveals Wilson?s mastery of natural elements like sea and sky and his eye for genre detail, such as the grief stricken families on the quayside, waving their loved ones off to far-away shores. Date: 1852
