Four cards representing the fact that four members of a household in Maltravers Street in Arundel had enlisted 1914. The Earl of Arundel had converted his ancestral castle into recruiting offices and had established an Order of Patriotism with medals. One was given to each local recruit and by the time this photograph was published, 400 out of a population of 2842 had joined up. Date: 1914

Mrs C. S. Peel, 1917

Dorothy Constance Peel, 1868-1934, aka Mrs CS Peel, prolific journalist and writer of numerous books on household management and domestic history. She wrote the weekly column, La Menage on cooking and gave advice on economising during the First World War. She was appointed a co-director of the women's service in the Ministry of Food during this period along with Mrs Pember Reeves. Date: 1917
