The Navy was selling these five vessels to the highest bidder, but with the proviso that all these ships would be broken up in a British port within two years. The named vessels for sale were Centurion, Barfleur, Nelson, Melampus and Pique

Ruins of Quirigua, an ancient Maya archaeological site in the department of Izabal in south-eastern Guatemala. The monuments at Quirigua include unusually large stelae elaborately carved from single blocks of red sandstone. Stela E (pictured) - the highest known in Maya culture. It was erected on January 22, 771. Now erected straight and covered against the elements. Date: 8th century

General Prendergast winning the Victoria Cross at Betwah

General Sir Harry North Dalrymple Prendergast (1834-1913) winning the Victoria Cross for his actions at Mundisore (where he saved the life of Lieutenant Dew) and at Betwah (Betwa) on 1st April 1858 where he distinguished himself during the brave charge made by the 14th Light Dragoons (now Hussars), against the rebel army of Tantia Topee (Tatya Tope) during the Indian Mutiny (1857-58). Date: 1858
