Ruins of Quirigua, an ancient Maya archaeological site in the department of Izabal in south-eastern Guatemala. The monuments at Quirigua include unusually large stelae elaborately carved from single blocks of red sandstone. Stela E (pictured) - the highest known in Maya culture. It was erected on January 22, 771. Now erected straight and covered against the elements. Date: 8th century
