The End of Sir John Franklins Arctic Expedition, 1845

Engraving showing the end of Sir John Franklin's ill-fated Arctic expedition of 1845, entitled They Forged the last link with their lives'. This engraving was taken from a painting by W. Thomas Smith, exhibited in the Royal Academy in 1896. In 1845 the British Admiralty sent two polar exploration ships, HMS Erebus and HMS Terror, to look for the Northwest passage round the northern coast of Canada. The expedition, commanded by Sir John Franklin, disappeared from view late in 1845 and none of the men were ever seen again. In fact the ships made it to the King William Island region, then got stuck in the ice. With supplies running out the surviving crew abandoned ship and headed south. However, none made it to safety and it is all died from disease, exposure or starvation. This image shows the end of that desperate attempt to reach safety. From 1848 onwards a number of relief expeditions were sent to find Franklin, but it was only in 1859 that Francis Leopold McClintock was finally able to confirm Franklin's fate

Louis Daguerre discovers use of silver iodide in photography

Pioneer of photography, Louis Daguerre (1787 1851) developed the process of the daguerreotype. One of the most significant problems which occurred during the invention of photography was getting the image to remain, to resolve this issue Daguerre concentrated on the properties of silver salts. He discovered a photographic process which involved exposing a thin silver-plated copper sheet to the vapour from iodine crystals which produced a coating of silver iodide on the surface. This plate could then be exposed with the camera to create a photograph. The engraving presents an image of Daguerre experimenting within his workshop with the silver iodide which became a crucial step in the photographic process. Date: 1830s

King Alfonso photographed talking to a woman

Who Would Be King? Photograph of King Alfonso XIII of Spain, captured by snapshotters during a trip to San Sebastien, talking to an unidentified young woman. The Bystander captions the picture with quiet outrage saying, Our sympathies to his majesty, King Alfonso. He cannot even converse with a pretty woman without being surrounded by snapshotters. This lurid example was itself snapshotted, to our profound regret, during the King's recent visit to San Sebastien. They still printed the picture though. Date: September 1912
