United States Air Force - Kaman HH-43F Huskie 59-1544

United States Air Force - Kaman HH-43F Huskie 59-1544 (msn 25), of Detachment 14, 42nd Aerospace Rescue Squadron, at Nellis Air Force Base. Built as an HH-43B, #25 was converted to HH-43F and allotted to Detachment 14, 42nd Aerospace Rescue Squadron, Nellis AFB, NV.Disposed of to MASDC as HG048 on 15 March 1973. Sold, and placed on the civilian register on 15 June 1974, as N321WN with the State of Washington Department of Natural Resources. Sold to Pyramid Oil Co (Moseley Aviation) on 16 January 1984. Restored to fly in 1986 and operated by Moseley Aviation. On 9 January 1995 the aircraft collided with a tree and crashed into a field during an aerial application flight near Glendale, Arizona. The aircraft was substantially damaged but the pilot was not injured. Date: circa 1961

Selling War Certificates, Birchington

Hannah Powell-Cotton, in her uniform as Commandant of Birchington Voluntary Aid Detachment, sitting at a table selling War Certificates during War Weapons Week, a three day event held in Birchington 23-25 May 1918. The family at the table is that of Jack Hedge, Masseur at the Quex Park VAD Hospital. He is standing behind his daughter, and his wife is taking a piece of paper from Hannah Powell-Cotton. The purpose of War Weapons Week, which was held in many localities, was to raise money for the purpose of biuying military weapons for the war effort. Thje aim in Birchington was to raise enough money to buy an aeroplane. The event raised over 10, 000. This photograph is in the archive collection related to the Quex Park VAD Hospital. The Quex Park VAD Hospital opened on 15 October 1914 and closed on 31 January 1919. The hospital was run by Kent/178, the Birchington Detachment. The Commandant was Hannah Powell-Cotton (1881-1964), wife of Major Percy HG Powell-Cotton (1866-1940) of Quex Park, founder of the Powell-Cotton Museum. Major Powell-Cotton was the VAD Transport Officer for the Isle of Thanet area, responsible for organising the transport of patients from the stations to the local hospitals. Date: 1918

Lord Harris with Hannah Powell-Cotton

Lord Harris photographed with Hannah Powell-Cotton, as Commandant of the Birchington VAD Kent/178. Lord Harris (4th Baron Harris, 1851-1932) presented certificates to members of the Voluntary Aid Detachment at Quex Park Birchington on Friday 11 June 1920. As Deputy Lord-Lieutenant of Kent, he he was a prominent figure in the County during the War, particularly as the Lord-Lieutenant, Lord Camden, was away on war service. Major Powell-Cotton's journal records saw about tent going up, arranged route for nurses etc. put up Aunt Sally, arranged sites for tables etc.... saw Girl Guides got their job all right. Folk arrived, about 142, did Museum, started teas soon after 4, over 100 sat down at once, Girl Guides waited well, a good tea, coffee, lemonade & ices. Lord Harris arrived by Granville (train), he had tea in Library, I got Guides, nurses etc. together, he presented certs. & spoke nicely of Thanet & Nurses in particular, then round garden & Museum & cold suppoer, all went well, weather nice & no hitches. The Quex Park VAD Hospital opened on 15 October 1914 and closed on 31 January 1919. The hospital was run by Kent/178, the Birchington Detachment.
