Possibly dating from the mid-16th century, this rambling building stood in Chick Lane (also called West Street) near Saffron Hill in West Smithfield, and adjacent to the Fleet Ditch, a sluggish, dirty stream. As a result of the Habitual Criminals Bill which has recently passed through the House of Lords, constables were authorised to summarily apprehend, without warrant, ticket-of-leave men, if they suspected they were getting their living dishonestly. Bill Sikes- "Lor, bless yer, I ain't up to nothin'! Why I was jest a-going ome to my tea!!!" (The policemen says nothing but walks him off). Date: 1869
