HMS Shannon

HMS Shannon, view of the armoured cruiser, taken from the fighting top, shows the deck and some of the chief guns. Built in Chatham Dockyard, England, fro the Royal Navy in the mid-1900s. Before the First World War, she served with the Home Fleet, generally as the flagship of a cruiser squadron. The ship remained with the Grand Fleet, as the Home Fleet was renamed when the war began, for the entire war, but only participated in a single battle, the Battle of Jutland in May 1916. Shannon spent most of the war unsuccessfully patrolling the North Sea for German warships. Date: 1912

View up Ludgate Hill toward St. Paul's Cathedral, London

View up Ludgate Hill toward St. Paul's Cathedral, London - note the SE&CR (South Eastern and Chatham Railway) steam locomotive crossing Ludgate Viaduct, oddly not connected to any carriages and actually on the wrong line! The railway bridge and viaduct (which ran between Holborn Viaduct and Blackfriars stations) was finally demolished in 1990. Date: 1925
