The steamship Bentinck, moored in the Thames, off Blackwall. The ship was owned by the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company (P & O), with accommodation for 102 cabin passengers and a crew of 173. The Bentinck operated between Suez and Calcutta Date: 1843

Ambulances were donated to the war effort from across the British Empire. Wealthy individuals, businesses, trade unions, charities, hunts, worshipful companies, churches and many others paid for ambulances. Manufacturers of ambulances included Rolls-Royce, Daimler, Albion, Morris, Vulcan, Austin, Sunbeam-Rover, Wolseley, Siddeley-Deasy, Renault, Buick, Crossley, Vauxhall, Argyll, Sunbeam, Lanchester, Ford Model T, Fiat and Star. Lively Lady yacht under construction, Calcutta, India

Lively Lady yacht under construction in Calcutta, India. It was built by S J P Cambridge with the help of two Indian cabinetmakers. It was later bought by Alec Rose (1908-1991) -- he made a single-handed Atlantic crossing in 1964 and sailed round the world single-handed in 1967-1968, for which he received a knighthood. Date: 1948
