Kandy - Sri Lanka - Buddhist Procession Featured Print

Kandy - Sri Lanka - Buddhist Procession

Kandy is very popular due to the annual Buddhist pageant known as the Esala Perahera, in which one of the inner caskets used for covering the tooth relic of Buddha is taken in a grand procession through the streets of the city. This casket is taken on a royal tusker. The procession includes traditional dancers and drummers, flag bearers of the provinces of the old Kandyan kingdom, the Nilames (lay custodians of temples ) wearing their traditional dresses, torch bearers and also the grandly attired elephants. This ceremony which is annually held in the months of July or August, attracts large crowds from all parts of the country and also many foreign tourists.

The Balkan States Exhibition - Earls Court - Old Japan

The Balkan States Exhibition at Earl's Court in 1907 was really two exhibitions in one. The main event featured a large Balkan village with practical working exhibits by 'native workers' (see: 10922981). In the Empress Hall (as shown on this postcard), one could visit 'Old Japan' for an extra shilling (5p) and see a Nikko temple and bridge, teahouses, geisha and 'spring time in old Japan' with waterfalls, lotus pond and cherry blossom. One could also watch basket workers, fan painters, porcelain painters, Kyoto embroiders, umbrella makers and a lantern painter at work. Date: 1907
