Harold Larwood Bowling, 1933 Featured Print

Harold Larwood Bowling, 1933

Photograph of the English bowler, Harold Larwood, in action during the MCC tour of Australia, 1933. During that tour, D.R. Jardine, the MCC Captain, used the pace of Larwood to employ leg theory (also known as bodyline bowling). Although successful on the cricket field, the tactic was deemed unsportsmanlike by many Australians and soured Anglo-Australian relations

Old Tennis Court Featured Print

Old Tennis Court

The old Tennis court near the Haymarket, London, appears to have formed part of Piccadilly Hall, a celebrated gaming house established about 1635, spoken of by Lord Clarendon in his History of the Rebellion as: a fair house for entertainment and gaming, with handsome gravel walks with shade, and where were an upper and lower bowling green, whither very many of the nobility and gentry of the best quality resorted, both for exercise and conversation. Date: 1875
