Carvings by Abbe Foure at Rotheneuf, France

Rotheneuf, France - The Emerald Coast - The Rock Carvings. The village is a seaside resort but is famous for its sculpted rocks, "rochers sculptes". Abbe Foure (1839-1910), having suffered a stroke at the age of 30, which left him paralyzed on one side, retreated to a life as a hermit in the cliffs of Rotheneuf. He carved over 300 fascinating, grotesque and bizarre faces and figures into the rock as well as in wood. Date: circa 1908

The Kitchen / Smokehouse , Fontevrault Abbey, Chinon, France

The Kitchens / Salmon Smokehouse , Fontevrault Abbey, Near Chinon, Anjou , Loire Valley, France - pictured before restoration (before the chimneys were added back on). The byzantine kitchens, built in Charente stone are an architectural peculiarity of the Royal Abbey, built in octagonal form, its roof prickling with pointy chimneys and fish-scale slating, providing much debate for architectural historians. Within, fish (mostly salmon, then abundant in the Loire) was prepared, constituting the nuns staple diet. Date: circa 1910s
