Joseph Chamberlain torch-lit goodbye, 1902

The journey of Mr Chamberlain: Birmingham's torch-lit goodbye. Joseph Chamberlain was entertained by his fellow citizens at a banquet in Birmingham. They were escorted part of the way home to Highbury by 4000 torchbearers. Mr Chamberlain's carriage is seen here leaving the Town Hall. Date: 1902

Athelstan House Remand / Probation Home, Birmingham

Athelstan House on Moseley Road, Birmingham, was built in 1911 following a gift from Barrow Cadbury. Over the next 90 years, it variously served as a boys hostel, remand home and probation hostel. Date: circa 1924
