Alsace by Gaston Leroux and Lucien Camille, first produced at the Theatre Rejane, Paris, November 1913. The German occupation of Alsace had long been an emotional issue for the French. Flyer for the Royal Court Theatre, London, April 1915. Performed in French. After Bernhardt, Rejane was the most famous French actress of the day. Date: 1915

WW1 - French success at Steinbach, 3rd January 1915

WW1 - An illustration representing the French reclaiming Alsace from German occupation. The illustration recreates the scene by using the well-known fairytale 'Sleeping Beauty', to represent the event. Alsace is depicted as Sleeping Beauty, the French soldier battles through the thorned walls to battle down the enemy, the German soldier. The French soldier battles his way through to rescue and break the 'spell' cast over Alsace. Date: 1915

Captured German Standard

The first German Standard captured by the French is displayed in the window of the Ministry of War on the Rue St Dominique, Paris. The flag, of the German 132nd infantry regiment, was captured by the 10th battalion of 'Chasseurs ࠰ied' at St Blaise in Alsace. The forecourt of the Ministry is guarded by soldiers to hold back the enthusiastic crowd that has gathered outside. Date: August 1914
