Originally founded in 1525 by Thomas Wolsey, Lord Chancellor of England and Cardinal Archbishop of York as Cardinal College. In 1532 it was re-founded as King Henry VIII's College by Henry VIII, who then re-founded it again in 1546 as Christ Church. Part of Box 366. Date: circa 1900

Engraving of Sir John Hawkins (1532-1595); Elizabethan seafarer, shipbuilder, MP, Treasurer of the Navy. In 1588 he was Rear-Admiral of the English fleet and Captain of the Victory in action against the Spanish Armada. He died, aged 63, on passage to South America to attack the Spanish Treasure Fleet
