French spoils from China exhibited at Tuileries, 1861

French spoils from China recently exhibited at the Palace of the Tuileries. Treasures and valuable objects sent home from the Summer Palace as a present to Napoleon III, the Emperor of France by the French expeditionary army, after the Second Opium War which pitted the British and French Empires against the Qing dynasty of China. The main figure in the image represents the Chinese Emperors war costume and above his head the crown of ceremony. Also depicted are a selection of arms, a pagoda, a perfume jar and a Chinese dragon in gilt copper.
