Old Bill, dog mascot of HMS Falmouth in WW1
Rescued from a German fishing trawler in early August 1914 by HMS Falmouth, Fritz the wire haired terrier was promptly re-christened Old Bill by the crew, and adopted as their mascot. Old Bill saw action at the Battle of Jutland amongst others, and after the sinking of HMS Falmouth by torpedoes, he when to live at Plymouth Barracks, where he remained a popular pet, living to a ripe old age. He is pictured here, immediately after his dramatic rescue from the German trawler. Date: August 1916
