Breaking ground for a new settlement - Chios
Triumphal Greeks Arch for the ceremony around the breaking of the ground for the construction of a new village on the Island of Chios, at this point under Ottoman Turkish control. The island is in the Aegean Sea only 5 miles off the coast of Asia Minor. Misfortune had struck the island in 1881, when an earthquake, estimated as 6.5 on the Richter scale damaged a large portion of the islands buildings. New settlements such as the one pictured were constructed in efforts uniting Turkish, Greek and international governments
