Burnand is holding a copy of the Fortnightly Review, for which he wrote theatre reviews - perhaps he had criticised Violet Vanbrughs appearance as Rosalind (dressed in tights as a boy) in Shakespeares As You Like It, at the Theatre Royal, Margate. The following year she was to make her first professional acting role, at Tooles Theatre, London, in Burnands own burlesque, Faust and Loose.
