Zeebrugge - Petty Officer Reed rescuing Lieutenant Alleyn
One of the eight actions which earned the Victoria Cross during the Zeebrugge Raid of 1918. Petty-officer Reed found Lieutenant Sir John Alleyne was unable to leave the conning tower on board the Vindictive owing to a severe wound. He therefore proceeded to carry Lieutenant Alleyne to the side after a difficult journey over a metal strewn deck all the while being subjected to heavy fire from different angles. In spite of this, Reed was able to reach the side and drop Lieut. Alleyne after shouting to those below. Both men were eventually rescued. Date: 1918
