Yeni Camii (New Mosque) viewed from Galata Bridge, Istanbul

The Yeni Cami ( New Mosque of the Valide Sultan ) in Constantinople, Turkey. Standing at the Stamboul end of the Galata Bridge. Begun in 1597, original architect Davut Aga, a former apprentice of the great Sinan. Aga died in 1599 and replaced by Dalgic Ahmet Cavus until 1603, when the death of Mehmet III halted construction on the Mosque since his Mother had lost her power in the Palace. Ahmed I showed no interest in completing the Mosque, neither did his immediate successors. Stood unfinished and then destroyed by fire in 1660. New Valide Sultan (Sultans Mother) who decided to rebuild it as an act of piety. Architect Mustafa Aga was put in charge and the building was completed according to original design in 1663.
