Workmens dwellings damaged by the mass German airship raid
On the night of the 31st January 1916, Zeppelins of the German Navy attacked the Midlands causing extensive damage. Air raid sirens were used for the first time to warn the civilian population of the incoming aerial attack. Police ensured that a black-out was in place. Workmen stand in the rubble.
