The Mount Edgcumbe Industrial Training Ship for Homeless and Destitute Boys was established at Saltash in Cornwall in 1877. Boys aged 12-15, placed there by magistrates, were trained in seamanship, with many going on to join the naval services. Members of the ships band, shown here, often graduated to become military bandsmen
