Training Ship Cornwall, Purfleet, Essex
The Training Ship Cornwall was established on the River Thames at Purfleet, Essex, in 1859 by the School Ship Society as a boys reformatory establishment. In 1868, a replacement vessel took on the name and remained at Purfleet until moving to Denton, near Gravesend, Kent, in 1928. Boys aged 13-15 were taught all aspects of seamanship and many went on to have a career at sea
