Titanic - W. T. Stead

William Thomas Stead (1849 - 1912), English journalist and victim in the Titanic disaster. He became assistant editor, and later editor, of the Pall Mall Gazette and founded the Review of Reviews which he edited until his death. He campaigned against child prostitution, and spent three months in prison as a result. He was also a peace campaigner. He was interested in psychical research, founding a spiritualistic magazine, Borderland, in 1893. He died on the Titanic, on which he was travelling to a religious conference in New York, after heroically helping women and children onto lifeboats. Date: 1912
